The book is the readings of his diary telling of a specific event in his life. There isn't a backstory of his "life" except for what prompted him to do what he did and why. The other characters weren't very developed and were mere "helpers". The story is definitely a creative one. I would've been ready to read this as a series chronicling his entire life from his diaries, I was kinda disappointed he didn't do that.

I bought this copy as a gift for my favorite Aunt. It has always been one of my most treasured books. You can't be a Roald Dahl fan and not have read this one (word to the wise, it has Adult content).
