This isn't bad as Sci fi goes. It works pretty well and is immersive and fun. I wanted a little more imagination in some areas (why would a drone army use audible sounds, etc?) but that's just nitpicking. The character development was OK. The characters slotted a bit too neatly into categories, and while they weren't one dimensional they also weren't really round. She had a limited repertoire of facial expressions that left everyone grinning a lot.
The romance didn't work well for me. She set Bennett up at the beginning in a terrible long term relationship with privileges, then set up Bennett and Flynn for an affaire that went deeper than expected. I saw what she was trying to do but didn't really feel it. I think the timing was off, and she needed to develop it more before consummation rather than after.
I tend to lose patience with the put upon partner in a souring relationship trope. It's just really hard to balance reasons for staying vs reasons for leaving. I felt she didn't provide any reasons to stay really, and that made the whole situation a bit overdramatized.
I'm planning to read the next volume though. It could go either way.

Gyrfalcon Taking Shield Book 1 eBook Anna Butler Reviews
What a great beginning to a series; and want an incredible way to leave me panting for more. Yes, it’s true. This one ends with no resolution for our erstwhile lovers Bennet and Flynn.
(Please note that Bennet is in an open relationship with Joss, a man 20 years his senior. For those who dislike cheating or open relationships, this is a warning).
Earth is ancient history, mythological even. O e of its last colonies, Albion, started expanding its territory and began a war with the mysterious Maess. Generations later, the war wages on.
Shield Captain Bennet is an expert at going into enemy bases, collecting information, and getting out. He’s a badass, pretty much. I kinda had the hots for him. Ok, I DID have the hots for him.
A super important mission lands him on his father’s ship. Not so good. But on the ship is the resident heartbreaker pilot, Flynn. He’s a gorgeous smartass and a hell of a pilot. So this is where I started dreaming of a Bennet, Me, and Flynn sandwich. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen—they totally left me out of the picture while they got it on. Oh well, at least I can pretend, right? They’re both bi, I’d fit right in.
Sooo, back to the story. Loved it. There were TONS of names at the beginning. This always drives me crazy. But hey, I let it go and focused on my man Bennet and it was all good. Those others were soon out of the picture. Same thing when he gets on the Gyrfalcon—lots of names, but just focus on the ones that get repeated a lot. Like Flynn. And Bennet.
So, there’s a battle and people get hurt, some die. But Bennet has a job to do, and so does Flynn. So, whatever happens next is in the additional books to the series, because there’s not even an HFN here.
Still.....I loved it!
I've read a lot of military SF and this is comparable. There wasn't a LOT of detail about the aliens in the war, but that's explained by their use of droid soldiers and them seeming to wish to stay mysterious. The details about the worlds and services and ships all seem good enough to support the action. The military SF/action aspects take up most of the book, and keeps things exciting.
The slightly space opera aspects were good, too. Our hero, Captain Bennett, is in a special service while his family has been traditional space fleet all the way. Bennett is a top graduate and a scholar in history and in strategy. So a bit over-the-top in blessings. He's the black sheep of the family in other ways, as his father also hates that he's gay and living with an older man.
And that leads to the dash of M/M Romance. It's just a bit (with sex scenes) after a very long slow burn, with no Happy Ending or even Happy For Now. Also, Bennett has been having (one-sided on his partner's side) an open relationship with his older lover, and their relationship also has drama that he is tiring of. So be warned on all accounts.
So, not really Romance per se, but LGBLT+ elements.
I wasn't immediately caught up in the characters, but they grew on me as I went along. I'm definitely interested in reading on in the series and will start the next book as soon as I download it!
This military space opera has a strong plot and manages to focus so much on its characters, that you sometimes forget it's not really a character driven story. There is action, heart-pounding adventure, and a world so detailed in its military, culture, history, and society, that you could easily see yourself as part of it. Gyrfalcon's protagonist, Shield Captain Bennet, is one of the most complex characters I've read recently. He is intricately created through a web of relationships - with his Shield team, with his family, with his partner, Joss, with the new people he encounters.
Bennet is nuanced, deep, and very real. He's a hero who you sometimes want to punch in the face. He's a man struggling to save his relationship who also never shies away from using whatever works to manipulate his partner out of a fight. Most of all, Bennet tries to find his way in life, despite the expectations and reprimand from his partner and father.
The romantic plot of this book is not your run of the mill romance book story. Bennet and Flynn establish themselves as a couple for the ages. Yet this is not a romance, make no mistake. Your heart will be broken repeatedly. More so if you continue with the series. But it's all so real, so relatable, that it's worth the cruel pain Anna Butler will force you through. If you like science fiction, gay or otherwise, this book and those that follow are definitely a must read. If you're anything like me, you won't be able to put it down.
