Running Scarred Scarred Series Book 1 edition by Jackie Williams Natalie Williams Romance eBooks
Jackie Williams' Running Scarred and her subsequent Scarred Series address a social issue that many people prefer not to discuss: disability and disfigurement due to war injuries. Because the dreams, desires, and fears of the characters were so well drawn, it seemed to me that the author must have personal experience in this area. The descriptions of the French countryside were luscious, and I could feel myself in the ruined chateaux as Ellen, the immensely wealthy protagonist, explored and wandered the grounds. She was so excited to have found the location for her dream; the haven she wanted to create for disfigured soldiers and their families. I found Ellen to be a strong, compassionate character; genuinely interested in creating community and a small slice of heaven. At first, I found her interest in Patrick, the disfigured veteran who lives on the grounds of the chateaux to be intriguing; however, I found the romance to move along a bit too swiftly. For me, there wasn't quite enough character development before that turn in the story. I also found the surprise regarding Patrick's past to be unnecessary; that extra history made him seem a bit unreal to me.
But overall, I found this a hopeful book. I loved Ellen's desire to create a haven, and her commitment to making that happen. I loved her earnest belief in her dream. And, as the story progressed, and the romance grew, I found myself rooting for Ellen and Patrick. Five stars!

Running Scarred Scarred Series Book 1 edition by Jackie Williams Natalie Williams Romance eBooks Reviews
I thoroughly enjoyed this! Reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast and takes place in France. Patrick is a war hero that has been hurt not only by a suicide bomber but his wife as she left him for being disfigured. He hides from the world in a cottage in a forest near an old chateaux, but fate has other plans as Ellen literally barged through his forest, distraught by her greedy fiancee, and gets lost. Patrick's greatest fear is that this beauty will never see him, just his scars. There's plenty of drama, tension, and romance that will keep you turning the pages just to see how it will play out. A great start to a brilliantly written series. I highly recommend this one!
I am an avid reader of romances, and this one hit me in a really good place. The characters are kind to each other, yet believable and imperfect. They make mistakes but then atone for them. The heroine is likable and gentle, without being a wuss. The hero is a true hero, with the scars to prove it. A humble, kindhearted man who lacks confidence after a terrible war injury. The description was just the right amount to paint a scene without boring the reader with too many extraneous details. There's even an overprotective big brother. I have very little time for reading, but I devoured this in one big gulp and wished for more. I will definitely be going on to book two.
Endearing romance. A young heiress named Ellen discovers a crumbling chateau in France which she decides to turn into a retreat for veterans who have war injuries that have changed the course of their lives. Her first night in France she is trying to find her hotel and gets lost in the woods. She is rescued by a stranger that she is unable to see, but feels inexplicably drawn to. She soon meets him again and discovers he too is a wounded warrior. Patrick suffered terrible war injuries. He lost a leg and had his face and half his body disfigured. He too is attracted to Ellen, but Patrick sees himself as damaged goods and could never imagine she'd be attracted to him. But Ellen doesn't see his scars. She sees the man and finds him very incorrigible at first because he tries to push her away. Patrick owns a groundskeeper cottage on the property she is trying to buy. He's a recluse due to the fact he sees himself so poorly. Ellen's project for the property is infringing on his solitude and although he doesn't want her to buy the place and turn it into a resort he can't extinguish his attraction for her. Ellen buys the property and begins her project, but gives Patrick a substantial amount of land to appease his need for privacy. This action breaks down the barriers between them. Neither can deny their feelings for the other any longer and a romance ensues. Just when everything seems to be coming up roses, Patrick's wife shows up. Patrick has told Ellen his wife left him because of his disfigurement, but when he takes off with her to London, she's crushed. Will Patrick get back with his wife or can there be a happily ever after for these two? I felt the story was sweet and well paced. I liked the fact for once both characters weren't models of perfection.
I really enjoyed this story. It hit so many emotional levels for me. I loved hearing about the renovation of the Chateauand the wonderful tie into the story of all of the poor wounds from the English soldiers. It made the romance between Ellen and Patrick more realistic and deeper than just too people falling in love. The miscommunications between the two were so easy to understand (not contrived for sake of story) when one realizes the profound and psychologically sensitive issue of burn wounds and loosing limbs from the ugliness of war.
On another level I felt all warm and fuzzy with a strong desire to get back to the book every time I put it down. That surprised me, I am not a huge fan of romance novels. Maybe because I get so stuck on my favorite genres. I'm so happy I found this author because in this nasty world we live it, ANYTHING that makes me feel hope and warmth toward people is a win!
Final note The author did a BEAUTIFUL job with the sex scenes. Just the right touch with no smutty sex. It takes talent to do that and do it well.Again, I highly recommend for any and all ages.
